PERTH ST CULVERT AND BRIDGE ASSESSMENT

Perth St bridseye view

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Burchills were engaged by Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) to undertake a detailed design for a proposed culvert upgrade at Perth Street, Toowoomba. WMS were asked to apply a CFD assessment of the performance of the structure under ARR2019 peak flow to assess the immunity during a 1% AEP event. WMS utilised the FLOW3D software to represent the flow paths and eddies which are unaccounted or averaged during a conventional 2-D TUFLOW model.

BENEFIT TO THE CLIENT / COMMUNITY

Analysis of the peak flood event without the simplification of a 2D model allowed Burchills to provide an enhanced and confident design assessment for TRC. Given the complexity of the geometry and the necessity to ensure 1% immunity, a CFD model is the only appropriate technique to provide an accurate representation of the domain and flow paths within it. Burchills were able to quantify the exact upstream conditions which would cause overtopping of the culvert and bridge system and iteratively modify the design to ensure immunity from the given ARR2019 peak flows. Burchills could then assess caveats of the design, including orientation and areas of high shear stresses due to increased flow conditions.

The CFD assessment was successful, allowing Burchills to achieve an approved design with total confidence and permit the start of construction.

 Our capabilities include:
